The nasty F word

For me, the nasty F word is Feminism.

Because its been taken out of context. Before anyone gets their panties (or boxer briefs) in a tizzy let me explain.

Last night we sat down as a family to watch the AMA's. The boys, like so many teens, are plastered to their earbuds. And because they have the coolest mom in the world- that understands the need for songs on demand, they have access to spotify. (we have checks and balances in place dont you worry!).

The opening gig? Pink and Kelly C singing. Alright! I can dig this. Two of my favorites up there making it look easy.

But the theme of the night kept beating over us: women! We are powerful! We have rights!

And we do.

Except the thing that is missed on "Hollywood" (Hollywood representing the expressives with the platforms to larger audiences than most of us will ever have) is ironic. They cheer for women to be respected, heard. To be powerful. And in the same 8 minute set have women dancing to the most popular tunes as half dressed strippers sharing the stage.

Men have made a way in this world because they are leaders. They are powerful.  And they have never needed to broadcast it.

Feminism is defined by websters as the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.

We as women are battling  something as old as time. And while that stirs in us frustration that we want to project, we’ve got to understand that paving a way can be done with integrity.

This begins with us.

“Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries; you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble. At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea. The enemy said, 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.' You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters. "Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. "You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭15:6-13‬ ‭

As a woman rooted in Jesus, I have full confidence in who I am. I am not fighting for scraps. I am at the feasting table. With my Lord and a collection of men and women.  I am confident that Jesus is fighting for me. Because of my identity, I can be a submissive wife.  A word and action our culture tells us is evil! Submission, in societal eyes, could never display equality.  But I partner with my spirit and walk in a completely different society than what is seen with our physical eyes. Making me confident in my equality as a female.

With this confidence, comes increasing strength that does not require me to shout “I am powerful!” With this confidence, I am empowered to boldly walk up right rather than arch my back and scantily dress myself for attention to reimburse my value.

We cannot shout one thing and act in the complete opposite direction. To be taken seriously, we must rise up in our rooted self, solidifying that we no longer need to shout because the king of the universe wars for us!  Like watching a child grow out of tantrums and walk in self control, once we grasp who we are and our roots are established, then we gain respect which leads to equality.

When we have Jesus, and his perspective, the ever changing world opinions no longer dictate our words, feelings, or behavior.

My 8th grade English teacher said its IMmeasurable not UNmeasurable

Recently I've read a book that is meant to launch one into action. Its a fantastic read!

The author asks the reader to have an honest conversation with themselves about what they truly long to accomplish and what they will need to bomb to direct focus on the goals. The book has great language, and makes for a fun read while challenging the reader. I was completely tracking with the writer.

When I decided to run a full marathon Chad and I did what the book was suggesting: have a candid conversation about what it would take. I know how to meet goals! So why then, did I feel so disheartened the further along in the book I got???

As an intercessor I tend to have heightened feelings. Until reading about this calling, I assumed the heightened feelings were my own, however, I'm growing in understanding. Typically I'm picking up my surroundings feelings. Jesus wants me to use that to press into the kingdom for His people. As I read this book a deep sadness came over me, and this time it felt like my own sadness. I felt completely "meh". I found myself wanting to just sit on the couch. I kept thinking "I'm so lame that I don't have any measurable goals so whats the point of doing anything!?!"

Okay, that's dramatic..

My goals tend to be so basic they feel pathetic.

-20 min of housework
-Exercise (not beyond 60 minutes per an agreement JC and I made-a post for another day)
-Cook Dinner for family

Those are my daily goals. Sure they extend and shift, but those are my musts each day.

Don't get overly excited. I know, my life is exotic.

I was internalizing this until Chad finished about half the book and expressed the same concern. OH great- my man that is assertive and driven feels like he doesn't have measurable goals either!?!? Are we that vanilla? Are we lazy? Are we missing "it" whatever "it" is!?!? If my own thoughts hadn't made room for panic, Chad's certainly moved me in that direction. (PS I have Chad's permission to expose this)...

As I processed with the Lord I heard him say "that is because MY goals are immeasurable".

That shifted everything! God's kindness in speaking about this allowed me to see the difference in attainable worldly goals(that are not bad!) and His goal... For my ways are not your ways, Isaiah 55:8... I had lumped them all together. But the truth is God's goals can't be accomplished with a check mark.

The enemy would have loved for me to stay in the sadness and paralyze my effectiveness by keeping me on the couch believing I am lame. But three things happened:

1. My husband shared his feelings. That allowed light to be shone on my internal dialogue.
2. I ran to Jesus with this freak out.
3. I made room (with silence, stillness, and reflection) for Jesus to share the truth.

Over the years, I have intentionally shrunk my measurable goals to keep an open space for the immeasurable. In my stillness I hear the Lord prompt me to send a word of encouragement to someone. In my quietness, He whispers His truth and revelation flows. So to use the books terms, I have decided to bomb measurable goals. The struggle now is to get comfortable with my life looking so "meh" because honestly, though sewing into the spirit promises fruit, I have little accomplishing data to reflect on unless the Lord reveals it to me.

This is most definitely NOT a post bashing goals! Run the marathon, start the business, dream big and juggle what to bomb to attain the dream! But don't make the mistake I did allowing room for "meh" when we can't bullet point our spiritual accomplishments. Its a HUGE trust step! Grab confidence from those checked goals to wade out into the immeasurable waters!

Yo mama

At 36 when things hurt, I want my mom. I want to put my head on her squishy lap while she played with my hair with her cigarette smelling fingers (the choice was always hard because then my hair would smell but mommas lap and hair play won every time).

There's something about mom isn't there? Who else knows you at your worst- I mean sure, Chad has seen me sick but did he have to redo my socks 9.2 million times when I was 5 to get the seam just right? A couple of close friends have seen me ugly cry but my mom is the one that experienced the years where crying one minute and screaming the next in one ball of confusion was normal.

Bless.

Maybe that's why she smoked.

Chad and I don't have moms on earth anymore. Sadly, sometimes it takes not having to know what you had. Day to day living just kind of has the ability to drown out blessings if we aren't careful. Then one day we wake up and we don't have it anymore.

As heavy as this is, I'm not writing to you because I'm sad. I'm writing because I need you to hear the urgency in my challenge to you.

Talk to your mom.

I mean TALK to her.

You are her baby. She loves you. Moms give you their lives (and all the moms said?). They spend sleepless hours worrying about made up scenarios to prevent said predicaments for you. When you laugh their hearts could burst with joy! When you cry they just want to hold you, wishing their love alone could take away your heartache.

When I couldn't get pregnant I didn't open up to my mom about it. I wanted things to be fine. Harping on it or answering questions was NOT something I was interested in. I locked my elbows to assure mom stayed at arms length. I regret not letting her in. Despite having a million reasons why, that made sense to me in the moment, I should have pushed past them because moms want to be apart, and truthfully I needed the comfort only a mom can give.

Talk to your mom. She wants to know what makes you light up! Tell  her what hurts you. How lonely you feel or what stresses you out. Send her a goofy faced picture just for fun to open up playfulness in your relationship.

Let her know you. Not the "my favorite color is" kind of know. The deep wells of your soul. Once upon a time she was what helped you tick, now let her know. It's her delight!!!!

PS just for fun I had to share- my mom was always up for a call from me, even middle of the night because she was literally up for who knows why. I am the opposite. The night it is for sleeping, not rearranging furniture, crafting, or taking a bath. The irony that I couldn't sleep and wrote this at the wee hours in the morning, is pretty comical.

Blessings. And Call Yo Mama

Perspective

If my life were up to me, it would be one exciting thing after another. My life would be one giant social media post (I married a man that could literally eat the same thing every day of his life. Never doubt God has a sense of humor)...Doing the same thing every day is like slowly poisoning my spirit.

But this thing called "adulting" requires monotonous behavior. Kids have schedules, my humans expect to be fed daily (this one gets REALLY old). My legs will need to be shaved every day, I'll workout every day, brush teeth... every day I'll be asked by Jesus to release hurts and offense and turn to him. And honestly, some of these are easy. I have a choice if I do these things. I'm called though. I'm called to be a good steward with what I have (the leg shavings for me-because I can't sleep otherwise). Cooking a meal blesses my family. Brushing my teeth takes care of what God gave me-and allows me to eat said meal...

I've decided things are only amazing if you make them amazing. Last week we took a trip for Chad's work. It was at a simple lodge. But I decided it would just be amazing! I talked to kind ladies that know how to serve others and laugh. I hiked. I delighted in seeing beavers for the first time. I drank coffee and read a book. And it was good....

The Lord can be found in the simple and the simple can be profound.

Just changing the position of our hearts can change an experience.

That's my hearts cry daily. Not every day will be a dolphin watching moment in Hawaii. The quiet lonely times in my home as I serve my family in ways they may never even know happen-I can find contentment in, because Jesus isn't boring. He has new ideas to present while I go on doing the boring. He takes me on adventures WHEN I SURRENDER AND LOOK FOR HIM!

Yes Girl

When the boys were little, the time of life when they wanted me to be with them constantly, I worked at saying "yes" anytime they asked for me to come play. I knew it was a short season. That one day I wouldn't be asked. I wasn't an imaginative kid, so my playing usually meant asking questions and sitting with them (okay, it also meant organizing or cleaning whatever was in reach).

I haven't done the mom thing close to perfect, but I did that pretty dang well. I step into their world. If I'm honest, this hasn't come from a pure motive. Its been driven a lot by fear. As an adult, I disconnected with my mom. Most of my intentionality with my kids has been driven to combat that happening as my boys become men.

Wrong motive or not, I long to be a YES girl. Many of you reading this already say yes(and maybe too much). I am on the other side of the pendulum and dole out a good "no" before the questions completely asked...

Not being a natural "yes" girl, I weigh my yes's. I wonder if Jesus contemplated his yes when the plan to live on earth and die in shame was conjured up? Father God asked his son to say yes to something KNOWING it would hurt him. KNOWING it would hurt himself.

God has asked me to say yes to some really hard junk. The hard yes' have been much easier when they didn't gurgle up and effect anyone else. But some of the giant "yes" have tangibly shifted my husband, my kids. That is when I have to wrestle with the Lord. My momma bear within shouts "hurt me, but please don't hurt them!"

2 Corinthians 3:18 says the goal is to be like him. How can I be like him and avoid the pain that a yes can lead to?

I can't. (Why do I keep thinking I can be more like him and yet avoid what he has been through!?!)

ugh. That is so annoying.

but also crazy good...

Yes requires so much unseen faith. Trusting he really will "work all things for the good" is hard when your mind-work-home feels like a battlefield. Believing his word that promises he will guard us under his wing sometimes just feels like empty words when the pain is suffocating.

but...

Sometimes his presence is so tangible in your yes you can't find words.

Sometimes his kindness is overwhelming you can't help believe.

And sometimes, if you are brave enough, searching for Him in the hard of a yes will uncover new layers of intimacy with our creator that leave you breathless.

Weigh the yes, sure. Guard your yes, thats healthy. But when He is clearly asking you, grab his hand and leap! Pain and all(and all and all), I've never regretted being his Yes Girl.

Snap, crackle, pop

It seems like attacks in my world come in waves...

Several years ago there was a rush of babies going to heaven way too soon. This sorrow lead many to rally on our knees and plead for the mercy and protection of Father God to order an immediate cease and desist!

The wave swarming us currently seems to be a tsunami coming for marriage. This isn't a new attack from the uncreative snarky enemy, however, this giant wave seems to be coming for couples on their way to being married or married for a short time.

As I find myself pressing into this tsunami, as I push bag the smoke and mirrors, I see this is more of an attack on identity.

WE MUST KNOW WHO WE ARE IN HIM.

If you don't have that established identity in Jesus you will easily be rattled into marrying someone that isn't your best, you will settle for how you are treated, you will be easily manipulated into their excuses for their behavior.

You tell yourself "marriage will fix it!" (whatever your "it" is) but marriage takes a giant highlighter and in neon color brings attention to the gut wrenching ugly inside of us.

I see shame keeping people in relationships that aren't bringing life. I see engaged couples wearing blinders to what they are headed toward. I see covenant being treated as a fix all.

snap.... crackle.... pop......

Its time for us to wake up! It is time for us 'old timer's to take back newlywed years for younger generations (when its supposed to be fun and naked time!). Its time for us to not just fight for the double digit marriages. Its time for us to nose our way into the youngers, expose the truth, fight for them! And for those in these situations its time to take the blinders off, its time to ask Jesus for truth vision, its time to ground your identity and standards in our creator!

No test or temptation that comes your way is beyond the course of what others have had to face. All you need to remember is that God will never let you down; he'll never let you be pushed past your limit; he will always be there to help you come through it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

Tug of war

As a mom, do you ever just feel buried in failure?

Today hasn't even been a day where the kids are crazy. I just feel suffocated in the icky feelings that come along with "not doing it well."  Tug of war is what mothering feels like. Balancing their needs and emotions with what God has charged you with to pour into them. And then you are supposed to just surrender your own opinions. If you've been reading long you know shutting up seems to be a theme in my life and one I only begrudgingly, I mean joyfully obey...

Mommin means I respect my kids when they want to stop kissing me and get creative with how I can still show affection. More tug of war. More me not getting what I desire.

Tug of war is exhausting. I was always the kid that gave up and let go because it hurt my hands, I never cared about winning. Now I feel like I'm in the rope pulling battle of my life and I can't let go. Because I want to win this one...my kids need me to keep hanging on... Jesus is asking me to stay locked in.

But as I tug and pull and grunt my way through this "game" I am exhausted and feel like I've already lost... yet something keep me holding on past the burning in my hands as I cling on.

Jesus.

He's asking me to stay in.

My dear friend says often "being a bad parent is easy, just let the kids do whatever they want." Let go of the rope. Walk away. Go get that corporate job you would've been badass at. Where you make enough money to PAY someone to do the crap jobs you don't want to do. Wait-that was my future...

Here's to all the yoga pants wearing, exhausted, tug of warring moms. Here's to a new day with new endurance. Here's to a God big enough to help us feel seen when the only thing we may feel accomplished in is completing the pile of laundry. And as I cheer us all on, remember, as long as we stay hands locked in we are GUARANTEED the win.

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.
